Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. When she was young her carnival barker father passed away and left her mother without a choice other than to work as a cleaning woman and waitress to support her family. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the institution she was in within two years of her education to pursue acting as a profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to pose for photos in a crime magazine, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. In Boston, she made a buck as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
